By expanding access to high-quality STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) programs in our communities, Indiana 4-H empowers young people to be more prepared for academic and professional pursuits in STEM fields and better equipped to thrive as leaders and innovators.
In 2025, 4-H educators across the state had the opportunity to apply for STEM program enrichment funds provided by the Indiana 4-H Foundation. Bailey Draper of Sullivan County was one of 17 educators who were awarded funding, which she used for a 4-H Design Lab and 4-H Drone STEM Project.
“We hosted two three-hour workshops where youth learned the basics of operating Cricut machines before putting their creativity to work by designing personalized keychains and cloth signs,” Bailey said. “We also discussed how these tools can be used for their 4-H projects while introducing them to the many career opportunities in graphic design, small business, and creative industries that utilize this technology.”
With $500 in general STEM funds, Sullivan County purchased a Cricut Explore 3, a Cricut Joy, small and medium heat presses, and the necessary tools, vinyl, keychains, signs, and other materials for participants to create their projects.
“We plan to continue offering the Cricut workshops for years to come and hope to expand the program by providing open hours next summer, allowing both 4-H members and community members to visit the Extension Office and use the equipment for their own projects” Bailey said.
Sullivan County was also granted $1,000 for their drone project, “Hover and Discover.” The funding enabled the purchase of four CoDrone EDU drones, batteries for the controllers, and a durable storage container to safely transport and store the equipment. They offered four introductory workshops and practice sessions where 4-H members learned about drone technology, basic flight skills, and coding concepts while beginning to build their confidence as pilots.
“Our goal is to continue expanding the program by offering additional workshops and practice opportunities throughout the year, growing participation, and preparing a team of youth to compete in future regional and state 4-H Drone Contests,” Bailey said.
